Are Laser Pointers Eye Hazard
Laser pointers are growing in popularity as a tool for both business and home use. These small laser pointers such as Blue Laser Pointers can be held in the hand and used to shine light on a board during a class or business presentation to highlight important points. But how safe are Blue Light Laser really? Are they an eye hazard or hazardous to overall health? Manufacturers argue that the dangers of laser pointers are minimal - claiming they lack the power to be a serious eye hazard. The reality is the light from some laser pointers can damage the eye if stared at directly for more than ten to fifteen seconds. Fortunately, eye injury is usually prevented by the naturally blinking reaction of the eye. On the other hand, if the light from a blue laser shines into the eyes for sustained periods of time, it can lead to a retinal burn. Although a person is unlikely to get a retinal burn from a laser pointer unless they intentionally misuse it, there is the risk of transient blindness. When the light from a laser pointer shines into the eyes, it produces afterimages that can temporarily interfere with the ability to see. Sometimes the afterimages produced by the light from a blue ray laser can persist for hours or even days. The key to avoiding the eye hazards associated with laser pointers is to use them the right way. Laser pointers have different levels of strength and choosing one with a lower intensity reduces the risk of eye injury. The key to preventing eye hazards is to use a laser pointer properly. Never look directly at the light or point it at anyone including cars; and, definitely, keep them away from children. If you should be flashed in the eye with a laser pointer, look away as quickly as possible. If you experience any visual disturbances or eye discomfort, see an eye specialist as soon as possible.
